The Flag Island
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
Zero is the inaugural exhibition at 1971, Maraya Art Centre’s new non-profit design gallery on The Flag Island. The exhibition presents newly commissioned projects by local designers working with eco-friendly materials. The designers were selected through an open call launched in partnership with Bee’ ah in January, for proposals for design projects that use recycled or sustainable materials. The designers demonstrate how the detritus of daily life in the UAE, such as cardboard tubes, old tyres and plastic bottles can be transformed and given a new existence as furniture, shelters and installations. Taking their inspiration from organic and cultural sources, from desert plants to indigenous architecture, and developing innovative techniques, these designers offer a vision of a sustainable future.
